Document Information

UK Documents To Be Legalised

New regulations will come into force on 1st September 2011 for children NOT born in the Netherlands. When applying for a first, or new, passport/ID card, for those under the age of 18 years, the following document must be provided:

An original unabridged birth certificate listing the parents' names.

Numerous countries are not signatories to the international rules regarding birth certificates. If the child was born in a country where it is impossible to obtain a birth certificate (e.g. Somalia, Iraq or Afghanistan) you will have to submit a full extract from the Gemeentelijke Basisadministratie (ask for: uitgebreid uitrreksel uit GBA) listing (both) parent(s). You can obtain this extract from the last town hall ('gemeente') where you lived in the Netherlands.

The birth certificate must have been legalised by the Dutch Embassy in the country where the child was born OR, for those born in the UK, by the Legalisation Office of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

The Legalisation Office of the FCO is situated at: Norfolk House (West) , 427 Silbury Boulevard, Milton Keynes MK9 2AH

Please visit the website of the Legalisation Office of the FCO: www.fco.gov.uk/legalisation or call 0044 01908 295 111 between 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. (UK time)

If a document or certificate has been issued in a language other than Dutch, English, French or German, a legalised translation has to be attached to the original, legalised document.

The following documents do not have to be legalised:

1. Documents originating in the Netherlands and other parts of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

2. Certificates and extracts from the civil status registers issued in Belgium.

3. Multilingual extracts from civil status records in the format prescribed by the convention on the issue of multilingual extracts from civil status records (Vienna, 8 September 1976). The following countries are parties to the convention: Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany, France, Italy, Croatia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and Switzerland.

4. The following countries are parties to the convention: France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. The documents must be dated and signed and, where appropriate, bear the seal or stamp of the issuing authority.
